AUSTRALIA. Gold Coast Airport has revealed details of 14 new retail and food & beverage units that it will open later this year. The airport will work with existing concessionaire Airport Retail Enterprises (ARE) and other operators including WHSmith, Heinemann Australia and HMSHost to deliver the programme.
Two of the new food outlets will appear in Gold Coast Airport’s terminal expansion area, as well as a new 1,342sq m duty free store operated by Heinemann Australia.
A signature café and bar, Wollumbin, will be the centrepiece of the new departure lounge area. The venue is being opened in partnership with ARE and the menu will be curated by local executive chef Matt Jefferson.
The terminal refresh will also include a bespoke bookshop and café bar in partnership with Burleigh business Golosi Food Emporium, a children’s store, and a news, book, convenience and souvenir outlet.
The first Schnitz outlet in an Australian airport will also open. The F&B brand is a franchise which specialises in traditional Schnitzel dishes. There will also be a range of new restaurants with Mediterranean, sushi and Asian themes.
Queensland Airports Limited CEO Chris Mills said that work on the project will start soon following the successful conclusion of a tender process. “We are set to welcome experienced operators WHSmith and HMSHost to Gold Coast Airport and to continue our partnership with Airport Retail Enterprises.”
He added: “This retail refresh is the missing piece for Gold Coast Airport and will further improve the experience for our passengers, as travel rebuilds and connections are re-established. Guests will be able to enjoy something delicious to eat and drink, while looking out at the spectacular Gold Coast and NSW hinterland, before they take off on their next journey.”
Queensland Airports noted that 555,000 people travelled through Gold Coast Airport in April, a number consistent with pre-COVID-19 levels. Monday 18 April was the busiest April day on record at Gold Coast Airport – and the second-busiest in the airport’s history – with 25,166 passenger movements recorded.

FAB SUPERSTARS & ESG AWARDS
The Moodie Davitt Report is inviting submissions for the FAB Superstars Awards 2022.
This second virtual edition of the awards will again shine the spotlight on the thousands of front-of-house and behind the scenes heroes and heroines who have helped keep the food & beverage community within our industry going throughout the challenges of the last year.
In addition, this year’s awards include an important new category, the FAB ESG Awards, which have been introduced to celebrate, recognise and reward those people and initiatives that have made a positive impact in the areas of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).
The FAB ESG & Superstars Awards will be presented on Tuesday 13 September to conclude the Airport Food & Beverage (FAB) Conference 2022, which is taking place on 12-13 September during The Moodie Davitt Report Virtual Travel Retail Week.
They will recognise and reward the achievements of travel retail employees across airport, airline, downtown store and cruise sectors, and celebrate the strength of the human spirit, resourcefulness and ingenuity in our industry.
