The Moodie Davitt Report is published by independent company Moodie International, now one of the world’s most successful multi-media business-to-business publishers. It was founded in 2002 by then sole owner Martin Moodie (who today controls 75% of the company).
The website (www.MoodieDavittReport.com) was launched as The Moodie Report in March 2003 and quickly became established as an indispensable source of reliable and real-time business intelligence on the global travel retail sector. It attracted a record 6,369,840 page views in 2021, an extraordinary result in a niche business sector.
MoodieDavittReport.com grew out of The Moodie Report, a weekly eNewsletter and PDF for the travel retail industry launched in September 2002 (subsequently relaunched as the sector’s first eZine in late 2011).
The Moodie Report effectively challenged – and reinvented – the whole trade press model, winning widespread industry recognition for its no-nonsense, easy-to-read format, style and content, mercifully free of the usual industry speculation, spin and barely disguised advertorial.
The html-linked eNewsletter and pioneering eZine are now sent to over 11,000 readers (a list that is regularly updated) making them easily the best-read media in the travel retail marketplace, as well as the most respected and trusted.
In October 2003 our brand was extended to The Moodie Davitt Report Magazine. It was an immediate critical and commercial success and is now a clear leader on a like-for-like issue basis in advertising terms.
Unlike other trade publications, it avoids the semi-advertorial ‘product feature’ approach and focuses instead on in-depth analysis of the industry and of the drivers underpinning the business – such as currency and tourism trends. From 2007 the quarterly frequency was extended to six times a year, bolstered by key supplements – including The Moodie Davitt Report Category Insight and dedicated retailer and airport publications.
In October 2007 we launched a digital Magazine, that provides readers anywhere, anytime access to current and back issues. It enhances the user experience through multi-media and a variety of viewing options, as well as allowing search capabilities of all articles, advertisements and images across the entire publication.
Unlike any rivals using similar technology for their paid subscribers, the Magazine is sent by hyperlink to the entire readership of The Moodie Davitt Newsletter and eZine – free of charge.
As an organisation we continue to invest heavily in innovative digital media, including the spectacular new-look, full-screen Moodie Davitt eZine launched in mid-2018; The Moodie Davitt Podcast; The Moodie Blog and a popular service called Moodie Davitt Live, a real-time Blog for trade exhibitions and conferences. We also have a strong social media footprint across WeChat, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter in particular.
Martin Moodie founded Moodie International in early 2002, after nearly a decade and a half at Raven Fox, publisher of the prominent print publication, Duty-Free News International (DFNI). From 1996 to January 2002 he was Managing Director there, having been Group Editor until the company was acquired by Euromoney in 1995. A New Zealander, he is now proudly based in Hong Kong, China and serves as overall Group Editor as well as leading the company.
The company conceived, owns and organises the airport commercial revenue sector’s most acclaimed conference, The Trinity Forum, first held in June 2003. Excitingly, in 2007 the Forum became a joint venture with Airports Council International (ACI) World (and from 2013 also with ACI Asia-Pacific).
Moodie International also co-moderates the programme at the annual Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA) conference. And it owns the acclaimed Airport Food & Beverage (FAB) Conference & Awards and The Moodies Social & Digital Media Awards.
In October 2020 the company hosted the inaugural Virtual Travel Retail Expo, a major digital innovation for the travel retail channel. As a result of its success the event was reprised in October 2021, once again attracting strong support from the travel retail industry.
The Moodie Davitt Report.com editorial team is headed by Martin Moodie, plus President and Co-Owner Dermot Davitt.
Dermot joined the team in April 2006 after a long and successful editorial and management career at Raven Fox, where at one point he worked as DFNI Editor under Martin Moodie.
An astute commentator, editor and reporter, Dermot is also an adroit conference moderator. He is charged with developing the company’s various publications as well as co-running the balance of the company’s activities with Martin Moodie.
In April 2016, his contribution and status within the company were underlined by the change in branding of our flagship title to The Moodie Davitt Report.
Chief Adminstration Officer Sinead Moodie takes charge of all administrative matters, ensuring that all issues to do with readership, circulation, and general operational and financial matters are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Quality customer service is integral to Moodie International’s approach and to Sinead’s role. She is ably supported on a part-time basis by Bob Wilby, formerly Chief Operating Officer from 2022 until his retirement from full-time work in 2015.
Subscriptions and Production Manager Kristyn Branisel takes charge of all advertising production, working closely with our valued business partners.
Chief Technology Officer Matt Willey, one of the company’s longest-serving managers, heads an all-important aspect of our business, driving technological development and our innovation agenda.
He was formerly Editor and Content Manager at SPG Media, where he was responsible for the editorial content and budgets of six independent publications, eight websites and the speaker commissioning for two exhibition forums per year. At SPG he edited Future Airport for four years. Matt is ably supported by Digital Content Editor Declan Moodie, a graduate in Film Studies and specialist film editor.
Our dynamic editorial team is complemented by a group of top-class freelancers. Rhodes-based Associate Editor Colleen Morgan is a highly experienced consumer and business journalist and published book author and Senior Business Editor Mark Lane is a top-class business writer. Michael (Mike) Drop, Panoples Revere and Elisabeth de Pleasance provide occasional freelance writing support along with two specialist journalists and translators in China.
Our design functions are shared by two highly talented freelancers, Kiran Ghattaura and Ray Heath. The Moodie Davitt Report’s pioneering WeChat Official Account is expertly edited by Hong Kong-based Penelope Zhu.
Hannah-Tan Gillies joined as Fashion, Beauty and Social Media Editor in July 2019. Hannah had worked for the company as a freelancer for the previous year and brings outstanding knowledge of her designated sectors to play. In July 2021 her stellar contribution to our titles was recognised by her being promoted to Brands Editor & Digital Marketing Manager.
Our commercial efforts are led by Irene Revilla, appointed Publisher in August 2018. Irene is responsible for driving commercial revenues across multiple platforms and for developing new projects.
She worked for WPP – the world leader in communications services – from 1999 to 2012 and from 2013 to 2018 as Global Head of Client Services (London) for WPP-owned Aviator/Kinetic. From April 2012 to August 2013, she was SVP Strategic Development (Shanghai) at Dentsu Aegis Network.
In 2007 the commercial team was strengthened considerably when long-time Frontier magazine (and Awards) Associate Publisher Sarah Genest joined the team as Advertisement & Events Development Director. In mid-2013 Sarah was promoted to Vice President Sales & Events.
In April 2016, Richard Jell, a former Board Director of UK publishing house Euromoney (at that time parent company of Duty-Free News International), joined The Moodie Davitt Report as Senior Advisor and Non-Executive Board Director.
Richard, a highly experienced Publisher, was a long-term adviser to company Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie from the foundation of Moodie International in 2002. He left in 2013 during the company’s brief period under external control.
